LeBron will leave Cleveland this summer no matter what, so he should leave some value considering Cavs' facing a complete rebuild

Cavs trade LeBron
76ers trade Fultz, Luwawu-Cabarrot, Bayless, #38 & #60 pick, 1st round pick 2019 (unprotected)

Cavs:
- because LeBron could opt out and leave for Nothing, a compensation like last year #1 pick Fultz + 1 x 2019 1st round pick and 2x 2nd round picks 2018 sounds more than decent in order to start their rebuild at least one step ahead

76ers:
Simmons/McConnell
Redick/Belinelli/Korkmaz
LeBron/Covington/Anderson
Saric/Ilyasova
Embiid/Holmes/Johnson
-> Win-Win situation, LeBron gets more rings and Embiid/Simmons learn how to win them, while being 2nd and 3rd force and take over completely 2020-21
- resign Redick, Belinelli, Ilyasova, Johnson

Why would the Sixers do this when they could just sign him outright? They're extremely high on Fultz even after a disappointing rookie season. So even if Lebron decides to sign somewhere other than Philly, I think they're confident they have a core that can eventually win titles. Obviously they're not ready yet and Lebron/ PG/ Kawhi would get them over the hump more immediately, but they're not going to give up on Fultz when they spent so much on him just to get a guy they could sign regardless.

When teams help a player in a sign and trade, they never get this kind of value back when the other team has the ability to sign the player outright.

I honestly just don't think LeBron would want this. If he really had this affection for Cleveland, he wouldn't be leaving them in the first place. He's leaving for selfish reasons, so he isn't going to weaken the position of his landing spot, no matter where it winds up being.

Feeling sorry for leaving and getting your city compensation doesn’t exist in the NBA. It’s a business. When a team can sign a player outright that’s what they do. The only thing usually involved in a sign and trade for an unrestricted free agent are unloading contacts and attaching picks but that’s it.
