As awkward as it's going to be, I don't think Boston is going to agree to give up another rotation player and this deal may very well be annulled. I could see a Celtics pick, which would be in the mid 20's, but not Smart.

Thomas's injury was baked into the cake when the deal was made. It's inconceivable that the Cavs didn't have copies of x-rays and doctors' reports. Caveat emptor. Rookie GM traded for a player he knew was injured, then complained about the injury. Bad look. Aigne should hold firm.

I think it's a bad look for one side, but it really depends on what other gms think happened. If they think the Cavs knew the general extent of the injury and are using this as leverage, they look bad. If they think that Boston downplayed the injury thinking a rookie gm would just accept it rather than make an issue out of it the Celtics look bad. I suppose there is a third scenario that everyone knew this was a realistic possibility and both sides were prepared for it. It does seem as though it favors the Cavs. I don't see a scenario where IT is on the Celtics this year and his current trade value has to be fairly low. In my opinion the Cavs end up with an extra highly protected Boston first or at the minimum two 2nds. At this point, Boston not getting a deal done probably tanks their season, IT walks, and there really isn't a realistic replacement for him. This trade not going through would set them back atleast a year if not more.

I think the deal gets done as is, or it gets nixed completely. The IT injury was known about before, or someone in Cleveland needs to get fired. I also don't think that Brooklyn pick is even hinted at if IT didn't have the injury in the first place. It was there so Cleveland could hedge their bet. If IT was healthy, that would have probably been a Clippers or Boston pick instead. Everyone and their brother has already come out and said how well Cleveland did with the trade as it is. My thought is another team said they could have one-upped it, and CLE is either going to get more out of Boston or nix it and move him for another package.

I don't think Osman is needed in the 1st deal and the Cavs would need to give up more in the 2nd. That would be a lot of start power if they could get it done though.

Mitch, they should. They drop Melo and his drama, while bringing in a legit, young, cost-controlled star to pair with Porzingis for the next few years. Not only that, but you significantly cripple the Cavs, in my opinion, while making yourself a solid playoff contender in a pretty weak East. Without Kyrie, the Cavs are no longer a giant, making the East at least possible to win for any playoff squad. with some success, and without Phil or Melo, NY could become a Free Agent destination again.

My favorite hypothetical trade
Cle-phx-denq
Den = Irving, shumpert and osman
Cle = faired, Chandler, Harris and bledsoe
Phx = Murray or mudia y, Frye, Jefferson
Rational- den does it because they get rid of there log jam of power forwards and most importantly they get their 3rd star to pair up with jokic and milsap . Puts them in the top 5 in the west
Phx does it because they get an expiring contract ( frye) of 7.4 mil also you get a guy who is going to retire ( jefferson) 2.5 million that gives you 9.9 million next year . Warren is on an expiring contract and you know he will be asking for a raise next year . They get rid of bledsoe and his injury history . They also save
Cle does it because they get 2 starters in bledsoe and Harris, they also get 2 guys who solidify there 2nd unit .
Trade machine approved . I have seen too many trades that the salaries are so lopside its crazy.

Irving is extremely talented I don't think anybody is questioning that. He is a superstar talent predicated mostly on his elite offense game where he is is a 40% 3pt shooter, probably best dribbler in NBA, and adept at finishing inside for a guard.
However, there are circumstantial things that will hurt Irving's value (his trade request, its late July and most teams have made their big moves already, teams may not like his new me first attitude, teams questioning if he can lead a team, etc. )
I think many of the trades on here have been overblown as far as what Cleveland is going to get. If you look at what they are reportedly asking for even the Cavs themselves are more realistic wanting a starter, player on a rookie contract and a draft pick in return.

Kyrie is an elite scorer, and . um . not much else.
Being an elite scorer is a valuable thing - no doubt - but there are so many things about his game and the market for stars, that he will not receive a terrific trade return.
