I'm sure you will correct me if I'm wrong but this three team trade would use an expiring contract in order to move his bird rights on or before NBA draft night.

Raps send Gary Trent and Chris Boucher to the Magic

Magic send Jonathan Isaac (back up 4 beside Kelly) to Raps and Gary Harris (expiring contract to create cap space) to Wolves

Wolves send Naz Reid to Raps (starting 4 beside Yak)

Raps would need ta send draft compensation to Wolves as well

Can't trade expiring contracts after the trade deadline.

2.) 18 Apr 2024 15:36:25
And the Wolves are not doing it.

27 Jan 2024 17:35:31
Raptors trade Dennis Schroeder to the Wolves for Naz Reid straight up.

Warburs

1.) 27 Jan 2024 22:26:57
Naz Reid has much more value.

2.) 28 Jan 2024 08:11:33
The center trio of Wolves are working, no need to change that.

3.) 29 Jan 2024 19:53:57
Premise was built more on the Raptors need for another big AND wolves need of another pg.

4.) 29 Jan 2024 21:25:22
Warburs… that is why I always thought a Payton Pritchard for Naz Reid trade felt like a natural match.

5.) 30 Jan 2024 17:17:17
Same thought Fer sure eh. Focus on both teams needs creates an opportunity for both teams to succeed post trade.

6.) 06 Feb 2024 18:42:54
I like this trade wolves might need more tho I thing Reid value is a little higher maybe a 2nd rounder or trade young and raptors get back another contract or two.

This is probably not the site to get a salary cap education but I'm gonna ask anyways. In this case I wish to focus on the pacers/raptors as my example. Some say why would a team trade a young prospect they are high on to acquire Siakam from the raps when they can get him for nothing in free agency. When I look at the pacer payroll the only path I see to acquire a max player in free agency is to (not sure the term to use but) give up their rights to at minimum Buddy Heild and Bruce Brown (meaning drop them for zero return)? Therefore the following options seem to make at least as much sense especially if you factor in developmental playing time opportunities for below mentioned prospects.

Option 1- Buddy OR Bruce (main salary fill)+ Obi Toppin OR Jalen Smith + Benny Matherin
For Pascal Siakam.

Option 2- Buddy OR Bruce + Jarace Walker + Aaron Nesmith for Pascal Siakam.

I won't haggle over picks (or lack there of) at this point as that would be just the final detail to push the real deal over the top. Also open roster spots have been left out as other players could be added or deleted to make such details work.
Acquiring Siakams bird rights could be a very valuable future asset to the pacers at some point and time down the road and you DONT get them thru free agency. There is always a flight risk but honestly if your gonna offer him a max deal anyways on a competitive team I just don't see it there. Losing Buddy and Bruce fer zilch to create necessary cap space also isn't free. Where's the logic in keeping players like Jarace who don't get minutes now let alone after signing said free agent. Obi (RFA) and Jalen (Player Option) would also see diminished minutes and could easily jump ship for nothing as well. It then becomes the question would one of either Matherin or Nesmith be worth the value of Pascals bird rights? Please enlighten me. Thanks eh.

Dumping salary is easy. My Hawks dumped John Collins who has 75 million left at 25 million per year. The issue is finding a team with a yearly cap space amount willing to take on the players. As far siakim he is threatening not to sign with a team that trades for him because he wants to choose his own team. I doubt if he would resign with the pacers.

Four team balancing act

Hawks get Pascal Siakam (commits to signing 4 year near max in free agency)

Magic receive Dejonte Murray

GSW take Clint Capella and Gary Harris

Raps grab Caleb Houston, Moses Moody and CP3 (waive). They may well need to clear another roster spot before deal.

Warburs

1.) 08 Jan 2024 16:47:32
Why would Siakam agree to anything without waiting till the summer so he can choose where he wants to go?

2.) 08 Jan 2024 20:30:39
Magic needs to add a first.

3.) 09 Jan 2024 00:26:25
With the salary cat forecast at $142 mm there be damn few choices for Pascal in free agency as the only four teams able to cut a $45mm check are Jazz, Raptors, Pistons or Sixers, with Maxey set for a big raise and Harris due for an extension along with others, where you forecast Pascal to choose? Raptors are not obligated to S&T him without appropriate returns. This is NO where near a steady Freddie situation especially considering there is no way another team values him at a great increase to his present contract!

4.) 10 Jan 2024 04:17:08
@Warburs. Right, but teams are more likely to give up future draft capital for a player under contract. Also, teams only have to send half of Siakam's salary to match in a S&T.

The Kings would easily be willing to do Barnes + 2025-2027 firsts for Siakam with a 4-5 year contract.

26 Dec 2023 16:54:24
January 9 Hawks Raptors trade with Pascal committed to extension.

Raptors receive Murray and Hunter

Hawks acquire Siakam and Schroeder

Two starters for two starters. Atlanta would still need to find a shooter for Capella (maybe Hardaway?) and Toronto would need to add some bench youth for Ananoby (Matherin and Sheppard?) to balance rosters more fully. But ya got to start somewhere eh.

Warburs

1.) 27 Dec 2023 16:25:57
How does Pascal commit to an extension without signing, and why would he? And if he is extended you aren't getting him for that.

2.) 27 Dec 2023 18:46:55
Yea I can see where standing pat with current roster as constructed and waiting for a team with cap space to take him in free agency is a far better option eh! Haha.

When does a draft pick count in dollar matching?
After lottery when you know where it lands?
After draft when you know whose rights are acquired?
After signing first contract?

Warburs

1.) 21 Apr 2023 01:29:33
When their trade restriction ends after signing their rookie deal.

2.) 21 Apr 2023 01:33:20
Oh, a draft pick itself is never assigned a dollar amount in a trade.

Once the selection is made, a salary cap hold is placed on the team for that selection. Once signed, a rookie has a 90-day no Trade restriction. After that a rookies signed salary is used for any maching trade.

Could the raptors put together an acceptable package for SGA? What would it look like?

Warburs

1.) 10 Aug 2022 16:59:59
I'm not sure there's a trade to be made here TBH.

To make salaries work they would have to send Siakam straight up, or 2 of FVV, GTJ, OG (with another small contract coming back with SGA), or FVV and a bunch of smaller filler.

Siakam is only getting moved in a package for a top ten superstar, if at all.

I'm not sure they would be interested in FVV and filler.

GTJ and OG are probably the best fits for the Thunder (age, contracts, talent/ skill)

There's a lot to factor in outside of the stat sheet. SGA has put up good numbers on some bad teams, has played 70/ 35/ 56 games over the last few seasons, and his shooting numbers took a pretty big dip last year. Also, no all star or all nba teams. He ranked 11th in all star voting for guards last year.

GTJ and OG haven't seen many more games over the same span, their shooting numbers have been better, but also no all star or all nba teams. Probably not even close tbh.

SGA doesn't seem to fit the mould of what the Raptors are trying to do, so giving up two really good defenders and shooters for a PG when they've already got Fred doesn't seem like their style. I think they're more likely to slot Barnes into more PG minutes than trade for one.

2.) 10 Aug 2022 18:53:56
GTJ & OG + picks.

3.) 10 Aug 2022 20:16:27
I think OKC would only be interested in Barnes.

How much more of this "over dribble, assistless hero ball" are us Raptor fans expected to endure!! Damn, is tuff to watch.

I hear that a lot in Boston as well, didn't realize it was going on in Toronto.

Would there be any way to spin value both to the Cavs and the Raptors in some form of Rubio for Dragic swap?
Both on expiring deals of similar $
Rubio out at least a year to injury
Raps and Dragic "sleeping in different beds"
Cavs could use Dragic in similar fashion as Rubio (low acquiring cost, short term veteran leadership for young aspiring playoff team)

Thoughts?

Warburs

1.) 31 Dec 2021 11:25:45
I think Cavs would have to add an asset like one of the 2022 seconds from Houston or San Antonio.

2.) 31 Dec 2021 19:32:31
I'd take Rubio for Dragic straight up at this point.

3.) 02 Jan 2022 23:38:56
I agree with Darry, because an injured Rubio would save 1.6M on the cap which would give Toronto room to sign DJ Wilson for the rest of the season contract into the empty roster spot they're holding. Wilson looked like a real nice fit for Toronto's development environment,

Seems like quite an over pay for someone who don’t play D on a team that dearly needs it.

That’s as reasonable a Siakam trade as I have seen. Atl gets needed size and D, SA get great pg to raise Wembanayama, maybe makes raps a bit thick in the 3 spot but definitely doable. TO prolly need to add Jalen McD (hawks) to stay out of luxury tax though.
